Oxted Sandpit - write in to object by 12th June
Application re: landfill site at the sandpit, Barrow Green Road
Last March we wrote a letter of objection to the Environment Agency about an application from Killoughery Waste Management to operate a landfill site at the old sandpit in Barrow Green Road. We have just received a letter from the EA saying that they are 'likely to issue the permit'. However, they are inviting further comments before a final decision is made.
If, like us, you are horrified at the thought of a landfill site on our doorstep and even more HGV traffic using Barrow Green Road on a regular basis, please do write to the Environment Agency now! The deadline for them to receive our comments on the draft permit and the draft decision document is 12th June. To get a copy of these either Tel: 01732 223224 or email sokes@environment-agency.gov.uk
Then quoting reference: Oxted Sandpit Inert Landfill XP3635XM
either email your objection letter to: NPT_Nottingham@environment-agency.gov.uk
or write to:

The letter from the Environment Agency also says, 'Impacts such as the number of HGVs on the roads relate to issues outside the site boundary and cannot be controlled by the permit'. Therefore, we could end up in exactly the same situation as with the Quarry in Chalkpit Lane, unless Surrey County Council intervenes to either stop, or place further conditions on, its planning permission. These conditions could restrict the number of lorries allowed on a daily basis, their size, their routes in and out of the site, etc.
So please also write to our County Councillor, Mr Nick Skellett, to ensure that the Council does all it can (this time).
The lorries using the Chalkpit are only quiet at the moment because the major tunnelling project for the National Grid in Croydon has recently finished. Without action now, it is possible that we could end up with hundreds of lorry movements, every day, six days a week! Obviously, HGVs using routes to and from the site in Barrow Green Road would also have a huge impact on the roads surrounding the landfill site. Most of our local roads are not suitable or wide enough for HGV traffic. The damage already caused to them by the quarry lorries is appalling. More importantly, the frequency, size and speed of the lorries present a constant danger to other road users and pedestrians. Contact details for Nick Skellett are:
